Mailbox Monday

Very happy that the library emailed me on Friday to let me know that it was my turn to have a copy of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, by Rachel Joyce.  I've been eager to read this since I first heard about it, and it fits in so nicely with the "walking on a pilgrimage" theme that I've found myself in.  I started it last night--despite being in the middle of three other exceptionally good books (North and South, by John Jakes, Sunne in Splendour, by Sharon Kay Penman, and Barchester Towers, by Anthony Trollope)--and I'm convinced I'm going to love it.

I also just received The Sibyl, by Par Lagerkvist.  I read this in college, and remember thinking what a powerful, interesting, innovative work it was.  I've wanted to reread it, but it's taken me until now to get a copy.  My college copy was destroyed in the great basement flood of 1983, which destroyed most of the books I had saved from childhood and college.  I still feel ill every time I think of those boxes of books floating in the basement when I came home after skiing to pipes that had burst while I was out.

Here's the Amazon blurb to whet your appetite:
THE SIBYL offers an opportunity to hear the work of a Nobel Prize-winning author (1951) whose work is not particularly well known in English. An old woman who lives in the mountains near Delphi is visited by the legendary Wandering Jew, who was cursed with immortality for refusing to let Jesus rest on his way to being crucified.
Sounds good, heh?
