Holiday Reading...2017

I'm eagerly anticipating December and indulging in holiday reading again.

So far, I am committed to the following:

A Very French Christmas - an anthology of stories and authors, some modern, some classic

Christmas at the Mysterious Bookshop - another anthology, this time all the stories are set in the same NYC bookshop; this one is a read-along with the GoodReads Tuesday Read-Along group.

A Redbird Christmas, by Fannie Flagg, author of Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, which I recently reread and fell in love with all over again.

Winter Street, by Elin Hilderbrand - looks light and fun

I'm also considering A Merry Christmas and Other Christmas Stories, by Louisa May Alcott or an anthology of Little House Christmas chapters. I've been reading The World of Laura Ingalls Wilder and so am eager to reread some of the stories again.

I would like to get some non-Christmas holiday reading in there as well, so I'm definitely looking for suggestions from other faiths that celebrate winter holidays.

  1. I cannot believe that the Christmas season is upon is already.

I think that my wife would like several of these titles, especially A very French Christmas. I might enjoy that one also. I may pick this up before the end of the season.

    Happy December reading!

  2. I also love reading Christmas books! I love that collection of Louisa May Alcott stories and I'll admit, I read the chapter out of Little House on the Prairie where Mr. Edwards saves Christmas to my kids every year. It really brings a tear to my eye! I'm focusing on the Christmas romances right now!

  3. I'd like to see the Louisa May Alcott book, is it a new collection or an old one?

I love the Christmas scenes in the Little House books. Do you have a favorite? (Mine are The Big Woods for comfort, and the Long Winter when I need a reminder to count my blessings.)

    1. I think the LMA collection is new--a compilation of pieces rather than a set she developed as a set.

I always liked the Christmases on Plum Creek--especially when Laura gets the muff from the town tree. And, of course, the Silver Lake Christmas is magical.

  4. The Redbird Christmas is wonderful on audio! It's been years, but I still have fond memories.

  5. It's been years since I've read the Little House on the Prairie stories. I should do that; there are so many fun holiday celebrations. I've never read anything else from Fannie Flagg, but I adore her Fried Green Tomatoes story. Have a wonderful December and happy reading!

  6. Hi JaneJS, I too read Redbird Christmas by Fannie Flagg and I loved it. Books have seasons and so nany winter booksbout there. Cozy mysteries for example great to read Nov-Jan. Akso you can't go wrong with the Brontes as winter approaches.

  7. Wow you're really diving into the holiday season! Quite admirable. I always think about reading Dicken's classic A Christmas Carol this time of year. I don't know that tale always does it for me.
