Coming in August... Celebration of Steinbeck on Classics Circuit Tour

I am a long-time fan of John Steinbeck. When I was about 13 or so, my older brother Stewart gave me a copy of Of Mice and Men for Christmas. I exhausted myself crying over that book, and consider it one of the best books ever written. I also loved East of Eden and The Red Pony, and recently won a copy of The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights from Penguin Classics, which I hope to read later this year.

All this said, when I discovered that the Classics Circuit was featuring Steinbeck in August there was no question that I would be rereading and posting on Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday. I have read both a few times and simply adore the movie with Nick Nolte and Debra Winger--my husband and I usually make and try to drink beer milkshakes when we watch this quintessential summer movie.

So, join me August 25, when I post on Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday as part of the Classics Circuit, and gear up to spend the dog days of August visiting fellow bloggers' sites as they discuss works by Steinbeck, who was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in literature "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception."

  2. I confess I have yet to read any Steinbeck, though that will change as my bookclub has chosen East of Eden as one of its choices.

  3. I loved Cannery Row! I'm still hoping to read Sweet Thursday. I'm participating in the tour also, will probably read A Russian Journal. If I get to it I'll add a second book. I'm really looking forward to this tour.

  5. The only Steinbeck I've ever read is "The Pearl" and I really didn't care for it, although I could see why people are impressed with Steinbeck's writing. Looking forward to your thoughts.
