It was my blogoversary on Wednesday, May 27 (aka yesterday). Babies born when I started blogging in 2008 are graduating from high school. Platforms for blogging have come and gone, but hating change, I have stuck with Blogger and have no regrets. I would like to figure out how to download and archive my posts since I know that Blogger will not last forever. Does anyone know how to do this?
I mostly blog about the books I've read, occasionally blog about the travels I've taken, the plants I've grown or tried to grow, and just random stuff.
I love my blog--often I won't know what I want to say about a book until I start typing. Without this outlet, my thoughts would remain the muddled mess that is their comfort zone.
Mostly though, I love the blog because it connects me with other readers whose recommendations and reviews I have come to rely on to enhance my reading life. Thank you to everyone who takes the time to be part of the book-blogging community. You are treasured!
Stats: 1065 posts, with about half about Jane Austen it seems; 7160 comments; >2.2 million views, but who's counting!
I updated my Popular Posts widget to show which posts over time have garnered the most views. I honestly think the Adam Bede one was linked somewhere because why else would it be #1?
Books Read Recently
Sandwich and Wreck, by Catherine Newman - a friend of my daughter's lent me both books, and since so many people blogged about Sandwich last year, I took the plunge.
Both were wonderful, although I'll give the edge to Sandwich. It takes place over the course of a week in a holiday cottage on Cape Cod. Rocky and Nick and their two adult children as well as their son's fiancé and Rocky's parents vacation together, and in the course of the week we learn about the dynamics of the family, their backstories (aka secrets), and traditions.
I really enjoyed spending time with this family, and I particularly loved daughter Willa, a sweet, sensitive, funny, young woman. I loved reading about vacationing on Cape Cod, which is still on my bucket list.
Wreck continues the story of the family the following year The wreck is a train accident that kills a young man from the town where Rocky and Nick live, and the accident becomes a pivot point for developing family relationships and, for me, a metaphor for Rocky's health issues.
In looking at Newman's author profile on GoodReads, Sandwich wans't her first novel but feels like it is her breakout novel. Has anyone read any other of her novels? I do like her writing style. Easy to read, interesting but not too angsty. Good comfort reading when escape seems the best option.
Spring Notes
Hope everyone has a good end of May, beginning of June! It's been cool and rainy in Colorado, which I love. The garden is in--all I have left to do is throw some zinnia seeds in their flower bed and hope they sprout and bloom before the frost hits us in September!
Bird nest update - something attacked the nest of baby birds on the front porch and there were no survivors--the entire wreath with nest was upside down on the porch floor. Mama bird is bereft and keeps on asking to come inside to mourn her loss. We thought she picked a great location, but Nature can be cruel. Mama EC Dove is still sitting on her nest by the back door, so hopefully those chicks will survive. Stay tuned for more of Wild America.
Living Room Refresh
We are finally replacing the carpet in the living room with hardwood floors. This is our 32nd year in the house and 22 since our last living room refresh.
The wood will be delivered tomorrow and then it ages for two weeks before installation. Then we paint, and by then my husband should maybe be done building the new TV table with towers he has been working on (while the boat project languishes). We found a very cool end table at our local antique store that the owner is refinishing, and new couches and chairs are on order. I still need to order area rugs, but we've picked out what we want.
This is what we're doing instead of going to Scotland in the fall as originally planned.

Eighteen years. That's pretty awesome. Congrats. And Happy Blogoversary. I don't know if I'll make 18 years, though I am coming up on fourteen in December so you never know. I hope Blogger doesn't go away; I'd lose everything. And both Sandwich and Wreck sound like good reads. I'll have to see if my library has either of them. Wishing you many more happy blogging years to come! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lark. The years just fly by. I enjoy your blog so much--I trust you will keep at it!
DeleteHappy blogoversary Jane, hope you keep writing for at least 18 more years, or however long you feel like it
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteThat is a long time to blog but obviously you enjoy it. I agree about the social interactions we have through bloggiing. I have learned about books new-to-me, it's fun to discuss a book with others...a great community. I started in 2007 with a genealogy project, a way to connect with cousins far away and for contributions to our reaserch. Then started a food blog I enjoyed it so much. Then a book blog!
ReplyDeleteIt's a fantastic way to connect and share our readingg passion.
Wow, you've been blogging even longer than I have. Good for you.
DeleteCongratulations on the 18th anniversary of Reading Writing Working Playing. Its a beautiful blog and I always look forward to your reviews, travel notes, gardening. And you are right one of the unforseen joys in starting a blog is finding other bloggers. We are online friends.
ReplyDeleteYes, truly friends. I love how I have found so many people who share my interests.
DeleteHappy Blogoversary! I tried Sandwich and seem to recall I found the mother annoying so discarded after the first chapter but maybe I need to try again. I am not a Cape expert because there are only a few towns I know well but Sandwich itself is disappointing.
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of your new living room! I would really like a new kitchen floor. I inherited tiles that look dirty no matter what I do (which is very unmotivating). Your husband sounds very handy (and I am glad he is feeling better).
I can see how people might find Rocky annoying. Definitely not an easy character, but she felt very real to me. I've only been to the Cape once, for a wedding in 1982, so no expertise here either!
Delete18 years!! Wow--. Best wishes on 18 more!
ReplyDeleteI had Sandwich from the library last year, and as fate always seems to be, I had so many books come through all at the same time, so I wasn't able to read more than 30 pages. It sounds like I should revisit it!
Best wishes this summer with your garden and the weather!
Library books inevitably all come available at once. At least with the audio ones, I can freeze my place in line while I finish up what I've started.
DeleteHappy Blogiversary. Love your blog and book & travel thoughts and insights here. So good. You are a great reader! And I hope you continue writing here for another 18. I have read both these Newman books ... and I agree I think I liked Sandwich a bit better, seemed a bit funnier. Devastating to hear about the bird's nest there ... gosh I didn't think it'd be attacked so close to the door. Sobering sigh. Good luck with your living room ... we have a bathroom renovation coming up ... a bit anxious about.
ReplyDeleteWe redid our upstairs bathroom last year--it was the only room in the house that we hadn't really redone. Good luck with your renovation! Not for the faint of heart!
DeleteHappy Blogoversary and congratulations on 18 years! Seems like a lot of us started back in 2008. Many of the young bloggers of that time have moved on to other bookish projects and platforms, but I'm glad so many of us are still at it. Here's to the next 18!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed Sandwich, but haven't made the time for Wreck yet. My daughter preferred Sandwich but thinks I'll like Wreck better. That's made me even more curious.
I'll be interested to hear what you think of Wreck.
DeleteI am so glad you and others have stuck with book-blogging. Such a great community!
Congratulations on your blogiversary! I started in 2006, so a couple of years ahead of you. I'm glad I discovered your blog through mutual friends! I agree with you about Sandwich and Wreck. I really enjoyed the first, but while the second was good, it was as good. I loved her earlier novel, We All Want Impossible Things.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how to back-up my posts on Blogger, but I save each and every post as an email. Gosh, I'd hate to see Blogger go away after all these years. Just going to assume it won't...
Good luck with your renovations!
Good for you backing up your posts as you develop them. I just write on the platform, press publish, and move on. Now I regret not having a more rigorous process.
DeleteHmm. I thought I left a comment, but maybe I didn't click "publish" before moving on. In any event, Happy Blogiversary! 18 years is remarkable. As JoAnn mentions, a lot of us started back around that time. I began blogging in 2006, so just a couple of years ahead of you. I don't know when I came across your blog, but I'm glad I did!
ReplyDeleteYep, Sandwich is a little bit better than Wreck, but I enjoyed both. Her earlier novel, We All Want Impossible Things, is also very good. I highly recommend it.
Best of luck with your remodeling. That sort of thing gives me great anxiety! Ugh.
Because of spam, I started having to preview comments before publishing them a few years ago. It's such a pain, but a bigger pain to delete all the garbage that comes through.
DeleteThanks, as always, for your comments.
Oh, I should have waited a bit longer so as not to double-up on my commenting. Sorry! I've been getting a lot of spam, too. "They" seem to comment that my post is full of great travel ideas when there is absolutely nothing about travel in those book reviews. Annoying, but that's why I moderate comments, too.
DeleteI'm so behind on emails so I just saw the email for your post. Congrats on 18 years! I have stuck with Blogger too. There is a way to backup your blog. I used to do it periodically, just in case something happened. Not sure what you do with it after you download the file, but I will try to remember the process of backing it up and I'll send you the steps. Also, I know there used to be something like "Turn your blog into a book" but I'd have to research that also.
ReplyDeleteNo Scotland trip? I haven't talked to you in a while so I had no idea. Your living room plans sound wonderful!
Hi Michelle--I will look for your email on how to back up, etc. I really appreciate any notes you have.
DeleteYes, Scotland is put on hold until next year. Too much going on in the world and in our lives to make that work too! Besides I still have so much to learn about Scottish history :)
