First Lines - 2014

Created by Melwyk from The Indextrious ReaderA Year in First Lines is a once-a-year, end-of-year meme, that creates a personal collage of your year in reading and writing.  Simply stated, the idea of this meme is "to take the first line of each month's first post over the past year and see what it tells you about your blogging year."

While I don't do blog memes regularly, I found it interesting that in four months the first sentences of that month's first blog post was for the Top Ten Tuesday meme.  I think it is probably coincidence more than a trend on my part, but you never know!
I was glad to see some Austen represented, a book that I read with the GoodReads TuesdayBookTalk group (which I really love to be part of), some new books, a wonderful classic, and a travelogue.  All in all, a good picture of me as a reader.

January - My first book of 2014 is Jo Baker's Longbourn, which tells the stories of the servants who wait on the Bennet family of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

February - Use Grammarly's plagiarism checker because it is better to have checked and edited than to never have checked at all.

March - The Broke and the Bookish hosts Top Ten Tuesday and this week the meme is all about popular authors we've never read.

April - This week's Top Ten Tuesday (hosted by The Broke and the Bookish) is about those Gateway Books or Authors in Our Reading Journey who got you into reading, or into reading a genre you never thought you'd read, or brought you BACK into reading.

May - I recently finished The Eight by Katherine Neville.  Honestly, I wish I hadn't bothered.

June - Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, is all about favorite books read so far this year.

July - Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, is all about Top Ten Favorite Classic Books this week.

August - The 3rd annual Austen in August blog event kicked off last Friday, August 1 at Lost Generation Reader.

September - Written in My Heart's Own Blood by Diana Gabaldon was my big book for the summer.

October - Last week I visited the Bay Area, Monterey, and the Salinas Valley, which included a pilgrimage to John Steinbeck's home in Salinas, where we had lunch, and then an afternoon at the Steinbeck Center, just down the street.

November - I read about The End of Your Life Book Club shortly after I finished The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, and got on the list for the audio version at the library, since I was in the mood for another book about books.

December - Kazuo Ishiguro certainly writes interesting novels.  I really enjoyed his classic The Remains of the Day, which I finally read last year, and I just finished and was so impressed by his distopian novel, Never Let Me Go.

  1. I hadn't thought it as a collage, but I like that image! It's so interesting to see people's reading this way - not organized like a "best of" list [which I also enjoy very much], but random. And I always enjoy the variety of the Top Ten Tuesday posts.

  3. This is a good idea. A fun way to look at what we were writing about over the year, isn't it?

  4. I really like this meme. It seems like a little tour of all the bookish places that we visited throughout the year.

  5. What an interesting idea! I see finally--it's first lines from your blog posts (rather than first lines of books reviewed). It's a lovely idea and really shows your personal stamp, the clear address to the reader, and the opportunity to get your honest opinion right up front. Cheers for a great year of reading and sharing it!
