Lisa at Lit and Life did this meme and I liked reading her answers to the following questions so much that I decided to do the meme myself.
What is your favorite thing about autumn? The mood. It's mellow, and golden, and precious, and fleeting. I love the fact that all three of my children were born in October, and my husband and I have November birthdays. We are an Autumn family.
What book reminds you of school? I read A Separate Peace as a sophomore in high school, in the fall. I think it was the first book of the year in English lit, and I loved it. So many of the really memorable scenes in the first half take place at a boarding school in the fall; it has become the definitive school book for me.
What is your favorite horror or Halloween story? I've always loved Dr. Suess's What Was I Scared Of? I love the image of the protagonist and the pale green pants becoming friends at the end. My kind of scary book!
What are some of your favorite horror films? Not into horror that much. However, I did think Don't Look Now was excellent.
What is a book release you're looking forward to this autumn? A Fatal Likeness, by Lynn Shepherd, about Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Seems suitable to a season for spooky reading.
What are three books you want to read this autumn? Bring Up the Bodies, by Hilary Mantel, The Leopard, by Guiseppe di Lampedusa, and Joyland, by Stephen King.
Feel free to play along and sing your praises of Autumn and books via this meme!
Ah, cute, the Autumn family! That made me smile.
ReplyDeleteA friend suggested The Hollow Crown to me - unfortunately I was only able to watch a bit due to time constraints etc, but it looks so good and well-cast. Definitely have to find it again.
Hope you have a lovely autumn. It's the opposite season for us here.
Love this post, Jane! I really like that all your children's birthdays are in one month, and you and your husband the month after. It makes me feel not quite so bad that my three children's birthdays are in the last quarter of the year - Oct, Nov, and Dec. My husband and I are a month apart in the spring, so at least we have a little break from birthdays! lol 3 in one month! It must have been hard for you when they were little, did the children get one combined birthday, or did they celebrate on their separate days?
ReplyDeleteI read A Separate Peace long ago, and don't remember much about it. I've been thinking I have to refresh my memory. The Dr Seuss choice is hilarious! lol
I really have to check out Arthur Rackham illustrated version of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I love the story and I can imagine what a good illustrator could do with the concept.
ReplyDeleteSadly I have missed The Hollow Crown films that have been shown so far, I must see if they will be repeated.
They are shown on Friday night, and then the most recent is on the PBS site until the next one. RII was the first--I missed recording it so watched it online. HIV, part 1 is currently up and then HIV, part 2 is this Friday. Then HV. I had hoped they would do the whole cycle, including HVI parts 1-3 and RIII as well.
DeleteI love your autumn tag! I've DVR'd The Hollow Crown filsm. I had a hard time finding them as PBS had them tagged as "Great Performances" instead of The Hollow Crown. I can't wait to watch them.
ReplyDeleteThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow is always my go-to fall book. I love the cover you've selected.
Ah, I love that your favorite scary book is by Dr. Seuss! Since I so often find that my dreams are influenced by what I'm reading, I'm not much for scary books myself. Thanks for playing along!
ReplyDeleteI still haven't read The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, maybe I will this Fall.
ReplyDeleteIt was fun to read your answers Jane. We are a November - April birthday family - with most occurring in Feb and March.
