The evidence of the rosette scarcely proved that Y had been to the gym, much less had done the sabotage. Y never confessed, never seemed concerned. By the evidence in the book, it could have been accident, like the other things that fell in the village when the lorry went by.1950 Democrathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17961144359831880261noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15714418.post-1091159604312262362010-12-10T05:51:46.626-07:002010-12-10T05:51:46.626-07:00Nice review - I have to say that I found the endin...Nice review - I have to say that I found the ending more than troubling. I was furious for a week, and it almost put me off Tey entirely. I believe firmly what Dorothy Sayers says in Strong Poison, that detective stories are the purest literature we have because justice is triumphant. This means that when justice is seriously miscarried, as in here or P. D. James otherwise beautiful "A Certain Justice," I have a rather violent reaction against them. (James does acknoweldge this tension in the followup to "A Certain Justice," "Death in Holy Orders," but it's still very upsetting.)

What I think makes it worst is how utterly horrific the crime Miss Pym ignores, and how disgustingly complacent she is about the misery she herself has inflicted.ibmillerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16914380316134426353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15714418.post-91441582192704717982010-11-29T02:19:27.694-07:002010-11-29T02:19:27.694-07:00Great post! I like Tey as well and this one sounds very good--not a typical mystery at all. I'll have to find a copy of it now!Daniellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06415242678720695754noreply@blogger.com
