The only Maugham book I've read is 'Brideshead Revisited' and although a bit 'dry', the Television and film versions are really good. I'm pretty sure I've got Cakes and Ale - I will dig it out and have a read (Lol just add it to the many books I want to read when I get time)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15714418.post-42815687155612560302011-07-08T11:48:41.702-06:002011-07-08T11:48:41.702-06:00I love your review - it's so sensitive and per...I love your review - it's so sensitive and perceptive. I hadn't given enough thought to Edward Driffield, which is a funny thing to say as he's really supposed to be the main character. But he seems withdrawn into the shadows for me. Reading your post, I'm thinking much more now about the differing representations that are made of him, and how they all reflect back much more on the person who makes them rather than Driffield himself. I do hope you'll read along with the Slaves again!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15714418.post-72804553072430077742011-07-07T13:19:21.215-06:002011-07-07T13:19:21.215-06:00We read this book for bookclub a few years ago - a...We read this book for bookclub a few years ago - and none of us liked it. We just didn't like Rosie - far from being 'a tart with a heart', she didn't have a heart to begin with. She was a man's idea of a woman, not a real woman.

It's very unusual for all of us to agree about a book, but I'm glad you found far more to think about whilst reading it.Tracyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03070070360087765540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15714418.post-174866923544207502011-07-06T20:42:44.944-06:002011-07-06T20:42:44.944-06:00Sounds like a very interesting book which really m...Sounds like a very interesting book which really made you think. I love these type of books.

http://www.ManOfLaBook.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15714418.post-8118935534492371452011-07-06T18:18:05.792-06:002011-07-06T18:18:05.792-06:00I like your point that there are multiple versions...I like your point that there are multiple versions of Rosie and of Driffield as well -- that adds a nice complexity to the novel, especially when you think about how Rosie is turned into art with the portrait, and Driffield creates art himself. Rosie isn't allowed that agency.Rebecca H.https://www.blogger.com/profile/10825532162727473112noreply@blogger.com
