UPDATE - the lucky number is 1, so I'll be reading Agnes Grey by end of January.
Actually I might wait until January 1 to start it so it can count for a Back to the Classics 2019 (assuming Karen at Books and Chocolates runs that marvelous challenge again next year!).
*****************
I've never done a Classics Club spin before, but since I am done with my Back to the Classics challenge for the year, I might as well!
The drawing will be held on Tuesday, November 27 and the deadline for completion is January 31.
Since I only have 10 books left and the drawing is from 1-20, I have listed each twice.
- Agnes Grey - Anne Bronte
- A Diary from Dixie - Mary Chesnut
- No Name - Wilkie Collins
- Daniel Deronda - George Eliot
- The Art of Eating - M.F.K. Fisher
- The Mayor of Casterbridge - Thomas Hardy
- Can You Forgive Her - Anthony Trollope
- Roughing It - Mark Twain
- Brideshead Revisited - Evelyn Waugh
- The Buccaneers - Edith Wharton
- Agnes Grey - Anne Bronte
- A Diary from Dixie - Mary Chesnut
- No Name - Wilkie Collins
- Daniel Deronda - George Eliot
- The Art of Eating - M.F.K. Fisher
- The Mayor of Casterbridge - Thomas Hardy
- Can You Forgive Her - Anthony Trollope
- Roughing It - Mark Twain
- Brideshead Revisited - Evelyn Waugh
- The Buccaneers - Edith Wharton
The only one I'm hoping doesn't get picked is The Art of Eating because I am already reading a few non-fiction books, and am ready to sink my teeth into a good story. Even though the Mary Chesnut diary is technically non-fiction, I am definitely hoping that one wins!
The Anthony Trollope and the Thomas Hardy books on your list are both on my TBR shelf waiting for me to "get around to them" someday. But I have to admit, I'm kind of rooting for The Buccaneers just 'cause I love Edith Wharton. :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the spin! I loved No Name. It was a crazy ride. I've also read Can You Forgive Her and recommend any Trollope at any time.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping you get the Trollope, of course. I plan to start The Prime Minister (Palliser #6) next week, so will sit out this spin. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteNo Name is a good one, not as well known or often read these days. I enjoyed it. Lovely list all around!
ReplyDeleteNo Name seems interesting. Have seen it quite often from fellow clubbers lately; I think I might add it to my list.
ReplyDeleteAnd I've been meaning to read Agnes Grey since my first encounter with Anne bronte through Tenant of Wildfel Hall. Seems your remaining books for CC are full of fun!
Have fun with the spin, Jane!
I read No Name for one of the earlier spins...& loved it.
ReplyDeleteSo I wish you that this spin :-)
Welcome to your first spin! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI am unfamiliar with most of these, but I enjoyed Brideshead Revisited. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteAgnes Grey by Anne Bronte sometimes gets a bad rap, but I thought it was very well done, and as an author who knew what she was writing about, this novel of the inside life of a governess is superb, in my opinion. (And that's when I want to add, and to hell with others who besmirch this novel.)
ReplyDeleteI've also read two versions of Mary Chesnut's diary. If you have not already purchased one, you may be interested in going with one of the less edited versions. One version was published a very long time ago and is not truly intact. Editors took liberties, etc. When it comes to Civil War women's diaries, I prefer the pure unadulterated versions.
And I must confess, I'm done, I'm so done with Thomas Hardy. His portrayals of women really do me in. It's over between us.
Best wishes with the Classics Spin!!
Great list! I hope you get the one you hoped for. My list is pretty scary. Knowing my luck, I'm going to end up with one of the massive ones. lol
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your first spin and only having 10 books next. No Name is really good, I'll be reviewing it soon since it's I've I read this month. Daniel Deronda is on my spin list too but I'm reading it in Dec/ Jan as a buddy read so definitely going to tag it regardless
ReplyDeleteI liked Agnes Grey...it's not nearly as good as The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but it's still fun. And it shows how much Anne Bronte must have hated being a governess. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteDiary from Dixie I have heard very good things about. Haven't read Agnes Grey but those who have say its a powerful book about what governesses faced in the 19th century.
